Ramadan
Ramadan is one of the 12 lunar months in the Islamic calendar. It is the month during and throughout which people fast from sunrise to sunset. Fasting, sawm, is one of the five pillars of Islam and an opportunity to practice self-discipline, spiritual reflection, and gratitude.
Across the globe, as the sun sets, families and colleagues and communities come together around tables of food for iftar, to break bread together, express gratitude, and pray for those less fortunate.
Giving to charity through zakat can be done at any time of the year, but the increased practice of reflection, togethering and gratitude may explain why zakat is most often given during the holy month of Ramadan.

Zakat
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is a form of charitable giving, rooted in compassion, generosity, and community. It can be given at any time of year, but is most often given during the holy month of Ramadan during which fasting, prayer, family and community are priorities.
Taawon is eligible to collect zakat funds. The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem issued a ruling in 1995 permitting our collection of zakat funds to finance our charitable activities, including support for orphanages and social welfare programmes.
Zakat is generally calculated at 2.5% of an individual’s or family’s accumulated wealth over the year. However much you choose to donate, we and the children of Palestine will be grateful and keep you in our prayers.

Orphan Care
Taawon’s NOOR programme brings light into the lives of thousands of children.
Tens of thousands of children have been orphaned in Gaza during the latest and ongoing assault. The challenges and vulnerabilities of orphans are complex, and their needs many. Taawon supports over 20,000 orphans through the provision of multiple services, including food aid, medical care, education, and psychosocial support.
Noor is Arabic for light, and through our comprehensive and committed approach to nurturing orphans through the most challenging of times and circumstances, we support them through every sunrise, every sunset, every step towards a brighter future.
NOOR was launched in 2024 in response to the sharp increase in orphan numbers in Gaza. Our comprehensive support programme was built and is bolstered by Taawon’s forty year history of nurturing children and families across Palestine, and facilitated through a credible and local network of long standing Taawon field workers and partners.
Over a quarter of the orphans whom we currently provide care tor are under the age of five. Nearly forty percent are between five and 10 years old. We maintain our commitment to them all through to adulthood. Help us help them with a donation to our zakat eligible NOOR programme.
